Why you're not seeing results at the gym (and how to fix it)
You signed up for the gym, you go regularly… and yet your body barely changes. It's frustrating, and it's the #1 reason people quit. Good news: the causes are often easy to fix.
Mistake #1: not enough protein
This is the most common one. Your workouts send the signal, but protein provides the building blocks: it supports the growth and maintenance of muscle mass.* Without enough, your body has nothing to build with. Calculate your needs (often 1.2 to 1.6g per kilogram, or 0.55 to 0.73g per pound, for active people) and compare with what you actually eat.
Mistake #2: too much cardio, not enough strength training
Cardio is great for your health, but to tone your body, strength training (weights, machines, bodyweight) is essential. Aim for at least 2 strength sessions a week.
Mistake #3: not progressing
If you've been lifting the same weights for months, your body has no reason to change. Gradually increase the weight, reps or difficulty.
Mistake #4: not sleeping enough
Recovery happens in bed too. Short, irregular sleep makes workouts harder and progress slower.
Mistake #5: lack of consistency
Results come from what you do every day, not from one perfect week here and there. That's true for training and for nutrition. Choose habits you can keep: a protein snack you enjoy, workouts scheduled in your calendar.
The simple plan
- 2 to 3 strength sessions a week;
- a protein source at every meal;
- a protein snack in your bag for busy days;
- 7 to 9 hours of sleep whenever possible.
With these basics, your effort finally has something to build with.
